Workshop Format

The workshop will commence with the icebreaker on the evening of Friday Oct 9, 2009.

There will be 6 oral sessions (3 hours each, two per day), a poster session, and field trips, starting on Oct 10 and ending on Oct 12, 2009.

Discussion is the essence of this workshop, with talks serving as a prelude to ensure high-spirited discussion. The main objective of a speaker is to bring other participants up to date on the most recent developments in his/her field with emphasis on new ideas, and speculations for the future. Participants are encouraged to address controversies in their field of study without feeling obligated to defend a particular point of view.

Morning sessions will run from 9:00 am to 12 pm and evening sessions will run from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. 30-minute talks will be followed by 15 minutes of discussion. After two talks there shall be 15 minutes for coffee break. Each session will be followed up by 30 minutes of discussion on all talks of the session. The poster session will be held in the evening of Oct 10th. The mid-afternoon period is meant for informal discussions in small groups. The field trip is  being organized to have a first hand experience on artificial recharge and reversal of soil compactiong and seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers.

To encourage open communication each participant agrees that any information presented at the workshop, whether in a formal talk, poster session, or discussion, including written submission in the form of abstract/paper, is a private communication from the individual making the contribution and is presented with the restriction that such information is not for public use. For this reason no written record of the workshop proceedings are published. However, participants are encouraged to submit a short paper which will be included in the workshop materials to be distributed among participants only.

Selected works presented at the previous workshop (Poro 2007) are being published in a special issue of Transport in Porous Media. On this occasion also a special issue of a journal is being planned on the research presented at the workshop. The papers have to conform to the journal standards and they have to undergo the normal review process of the journal. So to facilitate this process participants are encouraged to send a short paper by July 31, 2009. The length of the paper should be 8 to 10 pages. This way when we convene for the workshop, participants shall have a working draft of their presentations ready to be further developed in the view of the discussions at the workshop. Thus, shortly after the workshop participants shall be in a position to make a submission to the journal.
